The return of “Korean Monster” Ryu Hyun-jin (Toronto Blue Jays) has been finalized after a long rehabilitation period of more than a year following Tommy John surgery.
“Hyun-jin Ryu will return to the Toronto Blue Jays’ starting rotation on April 2 against the Baltimore Orioles,” MLB.com and Canada’s Sportsnet reported on April 29 (KST).
Ryu was diagnosed with Tommy John surgery during last year’s season after a medical examination revealed that he was suffering from pain in his forearm. Tommy John surgery is a major procedure that can take more than a year before a pitcher can return to the mound. Having already undergone Tommy John surgery once before, Ryu decided to take a “gamble” and undergo the procedure in order to continue his active career.
His gamble paid off. Ryu began his rehabilitation with three innings of four-hit ball in the Rookie League on May 5, striking out five and allowing one run (one earned), and then threw 37 pitches over four innings for Single-A New York Yankees on May 10, 4 hits, no walks, and no runs, and continued his cruise on the 16th, throwing 66 pitches in 5 innings against Triple-A Detroit, allowing 3 hits (1 HR), no walks, 5 strikeouts, and 1 run (1 earned).
It was perfect until the final check. Ryu threw 85 pitches in six innings against Triple-A New York Mets on the 22nd, allowing three hits (two homers), one walk, five strikeouts, and two runs (two earned) while improving his fastball to 90.6 mph (146.1 km/h) and his average velocity to 88.4 mph (142.2 km/h). He rejoined the big league squad on May 25 for an away game against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Ryu’s physical condition is not in question. Speaking to local media such as ‘Sportsnet’ the day before (28), Ryu said, “My rehabilitation went well as planned without any interruptions. My command and control improved every time I pitched. I have a better feel for my curve, changeup, and cutter.” He added, “The mound is where I need to be,” and he is eager to return.
With four perfect rehab starts under his belt, Ryu was initially expected to make his big league debut on Sept. 29 against the Angels.
