As the group stage of the U-20 World Cup Argentina 2023 nears the halfway point, the race for individual records is heating up. The race for the Golden Boot is in full swing, and all eyes are on the Golden Ball, which will be awarded to the best player of the tournament.

The race for the Golden Boot is already heating up. Brazil’s Marcos Leonardo is in the lead with 25 points after the second round of Group D matches. After a multi-goal performance against Italy in Group D’s first match, Leonardo scored again against the Dominican Republic, bringing his tournament total to three goals.

Cesare Cassaday (Italy), Alejo Velis 먹튀검증 (Argentina), Adama Boateng (Gambia) and Matej Szolgai (Slovakia) are tied for second with two goals apiece.

The record for most goals by a Golden Boot winner in a tournament was set by Javier Saviola (Argentina), who scored 11 goals at the 2001 tournament in Argentina. Saviola was touted as the “next Maradona” and went on to play for prestigious clubs including Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Elling Holland (Norway), who plays for Manchester City (England) and is virtually guaranteed to be the Premier League (EPL)’s top scorer this season, won the Golden Boot at the 2019 tournament in Poland, the only player to win the award for a goal scored in a single match. Holland scored nine goals in a 12-0 group stage demolition of Honduras.

With four Golden Ball winners, Argentina and Brazil are the two most prolific nations. Lionel Messi (2005-Argentina), the star of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, and Sergio Aguero (2007-Argentina), the best foreign striker in EPL history, have won the award.

By continent, Europe and South America were split with nine Golden Balls each. South Korea has also produced a Golden Ball winner, with Lee Kang-in winning the award as runner-up at the 2019 tournament in Poland.
